Satellite Radio-television Broadcasting Services
Satellite Broadcasting is a valid alternative to the traditional radio links normally used to transmit video and audio signals to the terrestrial relay stations.
The "Contribution Channel" is ideal for covering large or mountainous geographic areas.
Uses
1. Redundancy of terrestrial transmission networks.
2. Coverage of zones which are temporarily not reached by radio links or coverage of areas for limited periods of time.
3. Transmission of content to other broadcasters.
Costs
Maintenance costs are not proportionate to the geographic breadth of the transmission network but are concentrated on the single transmission terminal. The band cost is optimized by using economical satellites.
Advantages
1. A single transmitter covers an unlimited number of receivers located over very wide areas.
2. Digital transmission.
3. The signal can be received using a normal professional DVB decoder.
4. Rapid network installation.
Disadvantages
The signal delay is 600 ms compared to lower values for a section of terrestrial radio links.
